Oxford Hegel Workshop 2013. Exploring Hegel’s Psychology

2nd International Oxford Hegel Workshop

Exploring Hegel’s Psychology

Friday 6th December, 2013

Sutro Room, Trinity College, Oxford

9.00-18.30

Hegel’s Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences addresses the topic of psychology in the last part of the ‘Philosophy of subjective Spirit ’. This section has been virtually neglected in comparison with other parts of Hegel’s system, and this is quite surprising in consideration of the importance of the issues faced within. In his Psychology Hegel deals with the activity of the theoretical, practical and free mind. He presents his views on a variety of topics: sensation, intuition, habits, madness, language etc. This part of Hegel’s investigation into the notion of ‘Geist’ – which is translated into English by using either ‘spirit’ or ‘mind’, each with different connotations – bears the potential to challenge our modern understanding of the philosophy of mind.

This workshop is meant to be a forum for presenting various works-in-progress and to bring together philosophers from different backgrounds. The aim of the workshop is to discuss the possible contribution of Hegel’s thought to prominent current debates. The workshop has received financial support from the Hegel Society of Great Britain and the Mind Association.
