In 2023, the International Hegel-Association will hold its recurring congress in Stuttgart Germany, bringing together over 50 scholars. The four days of the congress will focus on a central theme that is not only relevant within Hegel’s philosophy, but also seeks a dialogue between Hegel’s philosophy and contemporary debates. The Hegel Congress 2023 is entitled “The Self-Relationship of Philosophy and its Relationship to the (Other) Sciences”.

The congress is dedicated to a topic that takes up a question that has accompanied philosophy since its beginnings: the relationship of philosophy to the sciences. For centuries, philosophy has determined itself and its tasks by defining its relationship to the sciences. It has seen itself primarily in a foundational role to the other sciences. This role of philosophy is also found in Hegel. However, Hegel also seems to assign a very independent role to the sciences in his real philosophy. In addition, he also conceives philosophy very clearly as a form of self-understanding of humankind. Along these lines, he understands philosophy as being related to art and religion. During the congress, we want to take up the discussion about the role of philosophy and its relation to (other) sciences. We aim to examine the idea of a foundational relationship of philosophy to the sciences in a critical way and to take into view today’s alternatives or reinterpretations in this respect.
