Romantic thought marks a turning point in the history of modern culture as it paved the way for ideas that continue to deeply influence our perception of the world and ourselves. By introducing and interconnecting two groundbreaking topics on the intellectual agenda, organic nature and existence, it generated super trends such as naturalism, existentialism, and postmodern aestheticism, that still dominate debates on all aspects of societal life.
However, a growing discontent with these cultural trends makes itself still louder as they seem to nullify human aspirations and lead to a feeling of world loss. As a reaction, an outspoken hunger for meaning and reality becomes more and more visible in our present day.
The main claim of the conference is that romantic thought not only permitted the maladies of modern society and culture but also contains a strong potential for remedy. By insisting on the realist ambitions in romantic thought, so often neglected in the reception, the conference aims at presenting romanticism as a novel way of thinking about nature, the self and their interrelations.
