Conference: Concepts and Intuitions in Classical German Philosophy (LMU Munich, 27-29 March 2020)

We are happy to give notice of the conference Concepts and Intuitions in Classical German Philosophy, which will be held at LMU München on 27-29 March 2020.

***

The transcendental distinction between concepts and intuitions as irreducible types of representation that are both supposed to play an indispensable role in cognition is a crucial achievement of Kant’s by which he sets himself apart from the empiricist as well as the rationalist tradition.

However, as Kant‘s talk of an “unknown root“ of sensibility and understanding makes clear, our insight into the source of this distinction is, on his account, limited. This assumption, as well as the “isolating“ procedure by which he explicates it in the First Critique, which might invite the impression of a dualism, has led various post-Kantian thinkers to either reject or revise the distinction.

The conference aims for a synoptic overview of various facets of Kant‘s account of concepts and intuitions as well as the critique and productive adaptation it underwent on the part of various post-Kantian thinkers. It thus seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the systematic reasons for the development of a crucial distinction at the heart of classical German philosophy after Kant.

The conference language is German.

Conference venue: LMU Muenchen, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, rooms M209/M210.

If you are interested to attend the conference, please register by writing a message to christian.georg.martin@lrz.uni-muenchen.de before March 15.
