The conference examines how historians approach the early intellectual formation (Bildung) of modern philosophers, highlighting the methodological challenges of interpreting early writings within a thinker’s broader development. It aims to rethink prevailing historiographical methods, emphasizing the value of studying early works in their own right and evaluating which approaches most effectively illuminate the role of formative intellectual experiences. The contributions will cover four case studies on the philosophies of Schelling, Günderrode, Feuerbach, and Marx.
