Dear Colleagues,
we are co-editing a volume on wisdom in the industrial age, which is part of a larger, multi-volume project titled A Cultural History of Wisdom, published by Bloomsbury. This series is coordinated by Stephen Hetherington, former editor of the Australasian Journal of Philosophy. We are currently seeking contributors for several chapters that remain unassigned in the volume.
For Volume Five, The Age of Industry (1760–1840), we are specifically looking for contributors for the following chapters:
- Chapter 3: World Wisdom – This chapter can cover wisdom related to the natural world, the skies, or the cosmos.
- Chapter 5: Political Wisdom.
- Chapter 6: Folk Wisdom – This chapter can also be written by a cultural historian or scholars with non-philosophical backgrounds and draw attention to lived experience, moving away from, for instance, the institutional world of philosophers and similar authority figures.
- Chapter 7: False Wisdom – This chapter can examine how wisdom may appear to exist when it is, in fact, false or misleading.
Each chapter may focus on one or more historical figures and/or geographical areas. What matters is to provide a rationale for these choices and to respect the given timespan. Chapters will have a word limit of 10,000 words (including notes and references). The official deadline for chapter submissions is 1 December 2026, with the full set of volumes scheduled for publication in 2027. However, we are open to extend this deadline in the case potential authors s are strongly interested in contributing a chapter but need more time.
If you are interested in contributing, please send an email to Mario Pati at mario.pati@unito.it by December 15, 2025, with:
- A chapter abstract (up to 500 words)
- A copy of your CV
Please note that the deadline for submitting your proposals is December 15, 2025. The deadline of December 1, 2026, refers to the date by which your completed chapters are expected, should your proposal be accepted.
Best regards,
Mario Pati and Gabriele Gava
