The IV International Colloquium on German Idealism aims to explore the themes of Reason, Nature, and World within the tradition of German Idealism. From Kant to Hegel, these thematic nuclei have played a central role in the work of numerous thinkers associated with this tradition. The Colloquium therefore invites reflection on the meaning of, and possible connections between, these themes as they appear in different authors of German Idealism, as well as on their relevance for contemporary philosophical debates.
To this end, presentations will offer philosophical and/or historical interpretations related to these topics, drawing on the works of the principal figures of German Idealism (such as Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel), secondary authors associated with the period (including Reinhold, Jacobi, Schiller, Hölderlin, Novalis, Maimon, Platner, Tetens, and many others), related intellectual movements or scientific developments of the time, or contemporary receptions of these authors.
Suggested Approaches
Philosophical and/or historical interpretations of the concept of Reason in German Idealism: its structure, limits, forms (theoretical, practical, aesthetic), and its relation to the systematic character of philosophical thought.
Commentaries on or interpretations of the concept of Nature and its place within the systems of German Idealism: Naturphilosophie, natural teleology, organicism, life, and the relation between inorganic and organic nature.
Reflections on the concept of World in German Idealism: the world as an idea of reason, as a horizon of experience, as an objective totality, or as the correlate of the activity of the subject or spirit.
Interpretations of the relationships and tensions between Reason, Nature, and World in German Idealist authors: the unity or division between the rational and the natural, understanding and sensibility, subject and object, freedom and necessity.
Studies on the contemporary reception of the themes of Reason, Nature, and World in German Idealism, including their relevance for current debates in metaphysics, philosophy of nature, philosophy of mind, and practical philosophy.
Investigations of discussions concerning Reason, Nature, and World in secondary figures or movements related to the period of German Idealism (such as Reinhold, Jacobi, Schiller, Hölderlin, Novalis, among others), or in the dialogue between Idealism and the natural sciences of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Submission Guidelines
Proposals may be submitted in either Spanish or English.
The body of the email should include: the author’s name, title of the presentation, institutional affiliation, contact information, and a brief CV (200–300 words).
Abstracts should be between 500 and 700 words, submitted in .doc format (or a compatible format), and anonymized for blind review.
Presentations should not exceed 30 minutes and will be followed by 10 minutes of discussion.
The submission deadline is 21 August 2026. Notifications of acceptance or rejection will be sent three weeks after the submission deadline.
