Hegel Seminar | Lent Term: The Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion: Texts and Contexts, Sources and Reception

Hegel’s philosophy of religion, as Hodgson remarked, has as its object not only religion as an inherent and necessary feature of human consciousness but also the object of religion, which is God or the knowledge of God. As such, it is a branch of philosophy as a whole.

We will look not only at the Lectures themselves, but also at the sources that Hegel used and at the reception of these lectures. We will be using the edition of W. Jaeschke (Vorlesungen über die Philosophie der Religion, 1983-85), and the English translation of P. Hodgson (Lectures on the Philosophy of Religion, 1984-1988 / OUP 2006-2008).

Meeting dates: 16, 23, 30 January, 6, 13, 20, 27 February.
