Schelling’s becoming system. Themes and perspectives
Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (1775-1854) is one of the most interesting and controversial figures of classical German philosophy. A constant research, oriented by the elaboration of a system able to keep life, history and freedom together, leads the philosopher of the identity to trace a continuous and coherent path, sometimes characterized by sudden changes of direction, that never leaves unexplored any field of philosophical or not philosophical knowledge and of reality. The articulated development of Schelling’s thought has evident elements of originality that express that “philosophical genius”, which allowed him to be early involved into the heated philosophical debate of the time, in order to propose his own and original reflection on the role of philosophy as a systematic discipline.
The critical edition of his works, begun in 1976 and still in progress at the Schelling-Kommission of the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, and the publication in the last decades of various studies show a renewed interest in Schelling’s thought. The recent death of Xavier Tilliette, one of the greatest interpreters of Schelling’s thought, represents an occasion to question on the legacy and the influence that this philosophy had and still has on the contemporary thought. These elements, added to the undeniable importance of the author in the framework of classical German philosophy, offer innumerable points for historical-philosophical and theoretical reflections.

Deadline for the submissions of proposals: September, 10th, 2019.
Procedure: Please send an abstract of up to 4,000 characters, including the title of the proposed contribution and an outline of its argument, to callforpapers@losguardo.net by the specified deadline. Proposals will be evaluated by the editors of the Journal and a panel of readers, and the results of the selection will be announced to the authors by September 30th, 2019. Accepted papers will then have to be submitted to the editors by a new deadline, which will be announced to the authors with the results of the selection, and will undergo a double-blind review.
Call for abstracts/papers
This issue of “Lo Sguardo” intends to investigate the several aspects of Schelling’s “becoming” thought, with the aim of reconstructing the fundamental questions that form the backbone of its system. In addition to give an overview, as much complete and detailed as possible, of Schelling’s philosophy, the purpose of this volume is to present a review of different interpretations, by highlighting relevant features of Schelling’s thought in the contemporary debate and the main perspectives of the research. The volume will be composed by three sections:
- System – Which meaning do the concepts of nature, freedom and identity take in the Schelling systematic framework? How does Schelling strive to think about the dualisms of spirit and nature, finite and infinite, theory and practice, identity and difference? In which sense is the art a true manifestation of the absolute? How does the reflection on the neue Mythologie intertwine with the late positive philosophy? These questions represent the main problematic elements which we invite the authors of the contributions of this section to reflect on, in order to re-thematize the fundamental concepts of Schelling’s system, and to show, at the same time, its richness and contradictions.
- Themes – Schelling’s thought cannot be considered leaving aside the controversies with the thinkers of his time, nor the undoubted influence that his reflection exerted on the subsequent philosophy can be neglected. For this section, the requested contributions on one hand examine Schelling’s Auseinandersetzung with the major protagonists of classical German philosophy (Kant, Fichte, Jacobi, Reinhold, Hegel), on the other hand propose in-depth studies on the interpretations of Schelling’s thought in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (by Schopenhauer, Marx, Heidegger, Jaspers and Scheler, to name the most famous interpreters). The section will also host essays dedicated to the reception of Schelling’s philosophy in the Italian thought.
- Perspectives – The most recent studies of Schelling’s system, in particular on the positive philosophy and the philosophy of mythology, and the not yet completed critic edition of his works require a discussion on the actuality of Schelling’s thought in the contemporary philosophical debate. This section therefore aims to focus on some new lines of the research, whether they are already present or not yet investigated. Some possible traces about which the authors of essays are called to reflect imply the following questions: how can Schelling’s philosophy of nature be still relevant? What role does his philosophy of art take in contemporary aesthetic reflection? How can be his practical-moral meditation in dialogue with the present?
