Giovedì 7 novembre si è spento all’età di 81 anni Remo Bodei, Accademico dei Lincei, professore di Filosofia all’Università della California e per molti anni docente della Scuola Normale Superiore e dell’Università di Pisa.
Bodei, fra i molti suoi meriti, è stato un grande innovatore degli studi hegeliani. A lui si devono le traduzioni dei cosiddetti Primi Scritti Critici (la Differenza tra il sistema filosofico di Fichte e di Schelling e Fede e sapere) e della Vita di Hegel di Karl Rosenkranz, ma fondamentale è stato in questo senso Sistema ed epoca in Hegel, apparso per il Mulino nel 1975: un libro che ha cambiato radicalmente l’immagine della filosofia di Hegel fino ad allora dominante nella cultura italiana. Il testo rifletteva essenzialmente sul rapporto complesso che la filosofia instaura con il proprio tempo: se è vero che la filosofia è il proprio tempo appreso sotto forma di pensieri, come dice Hegel, Bodei metteva efficacemente in evidenza come la filosofia fosse simultaneamente il suo tempo e il suo superamento, la sua comprensione e la sua alienazione. Secondo la metafora hegeliana resa celebre da Bodei: la filosofia è insieme civetta che comprende il mondo nel momento del suo declino e talpa che scava sotterraneamente nuovi percorsi e traiettorie. Ma in quel lavoro Bodei ha messo in luce in modo straordinariamente originale anche il ruolo – fino ad allora poco considerato – svolto nella speculazione hegeliana dalla matematica, dalle scienze della natura, dalla nascente scienza dell’economia.
Il percorso intellettuale di Bodei non si è limitato certo al suo confronto con Hegel. Fondamentali sono stati i suoi studi su Ernst Bloch, su Hölderlin, su Freud, su Adorno, su questioni di carattere estetico, di filosofia sociale, di teoria delle passioni. Il suo ultimo lavoro, uscito questo settembre, si intitola Dominio e sottomissione. Schiavi, animali, macchine, Intelligenza Artificiale (Il Mulino, 2019).
A noi piace ricordarlo in occasione della sua ultima visita a Padova, dove è stato invitato per presentare la nuova edizione ampliata e rivista di Sistema ed epoca in Hegel, apparsa nel 2014 con il nuovo titolo La civetta e la talpa (Il Mulino). On Thursday, November 7th Remo Bodei, Academician of the Lincei, professor of Philosophy at the University of California and for many years professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore and the University of Pisa, passed away at the age of 81.
Bodei has been a great innovator in the field of the Hegelian studies. In addition to the first translation of the so-called Early Critical Writings (The Difference between the Philosophical System of Fichte and Schelling and Faith and Knowledge) and of Karl Rosenkranz’s Hegel’s Life, of fundamental relevance was his book System and Epoch in Hegel (Il Mulino, 1975): the book radically changed the image of Hegel’s philosophy that has been dominant within the Italian culture. The text essentially investigated complex relationship that philosophy establishes with its own time: starting from Hegel’s claim that philosophy is its own time apprehended in the form of thoughts, Bodei effectively highlighted that philosophy was both its time and its overcoming, its understanding and its alienation. According to an hegelian metaphor, that Bodei made popular: philosophy is at the same time an owl that understands the world at the moment of its decline and a mole that excavates new historical paths and trajectories. But in System and Epoch Bodei has also shown in an original way the role – which until then had been widely neglected – that mathematics, natural sciences and the newborn science of economics play in Hegel’s philosophy.
Bodei’s intellectual journey was certainly not limited to his confrontation with Hegel. His pathbreaking studies on Ernst Bloch, Hölderlin, Freud, Adorno, as well as in the domains of aesthetics, social philosophy and theory of passions have been very influential. His last work, published this year, is titled Dominio e sottomissione. Schiavi, animali, macchine, Intelligenza Artificiale (Domain And Submission. Slaves, Animals, Machines, Artificial Intelligence. Il Mulino, 2019).
We would like to remember him on the occasion of his last visit to Padua.
